II. Guru And DJ Premier

Guru and DJ Premier found each other in 1989, after Gang Starr had already gone through earlier iterations in the late 1980s — the partnership that would come to define the group. That same year, they released their debut album as a duo, No More Mr. Nice Guy (Wild Pitch Records).

1991–1994

III. The Classic Album Run

Step in the Arena (1991) and Daily Operation (1992) — the latter with the single “Take It Personal” — established their sound. Hard to Earn (1994) included “Mass Appeal” and “Code of the Streets,” among their most recognized tracks.

1997–1998

IV. Moment Of Truth

“You Know My Steez” was released in 1997, a year ahead of the album Moment of Truth (March 31, 1998), their fifth studio album.

2003

V. The Ownerz

The Ownerz (June 24, 2003) was Gang Starr's sixth and final studio album before the duo's split.

VI. The 2019 Return

In 2019, DJ Premier assembled One of the Best Yet from unreleased verses by Guru, who died in 2010. “Family and Loyalty,” featuring J. Cole, was released as the lead single — Gang Starr's first new track in 16 years — followed by “Bad Name.” The full album was released on November 1, 2019.
