BIOGRAPHY
I. Identity
Slaine is the artist name of George Carroll (born September 27, 1977), a rapper and actor. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts — his family moved several times among the South Boston, Dorchester, and Roslindale neighborhoods during his childhood and teenage years. (Spotify's and Bandsintown's official bios describe him in shorthand as "born in Dorchester"; this page uses the fuller version, based on his own interviews.)
He started writing rap lyrics in 1986. He moved to New York in 1996, where he studied film at the School of Visual Arts before committing fully to hip hop. The name "Slaine" was given to him by Kaves, of the group Lordz of Brooklyn, after an Irish comic-book character.

II. Boston And Special Teamz
In the early 2000s he established himself as one of the most recognized voices of Boston's underground scene — a 2005 Boston Globe profile described him as "one of the city's most talented hip hop artists, oozing mass appeal." That same year he released the mixtape The White Man Is the Devil, Vol. 1.
He was part of Special Teamz alongside Jaysaun and Ed O.G., with whom he released the album Stereotypez (2007) — a group chapter, documented here as history, not part of his solo catalog.
2004–2016
III. La Coka Nostra
In late 2004, Danny Boy O'Connor — who was mentoring him alongside another artist — introduced him to his former House of Pain DJ, Leor Diamant (DJ Lethal). Ill Bill (William Braunstein) joined to round out the lineup; Everlast (Erik Schrody, also of House of Pain) would join later and leave the group after the first album. La Coka Nostra's current core is Slaine, Ill Bill, DJ Lethal, and Danny Boy.
La Coka Nostra's albums — A Brand You Can Trust (2009), Masters of the Dark Arts (2012), and To Thine Own Self Be True (2016) — are documented here as group history, never as part of Slaine's solo catalog.
2011–2021
IV. Solo Career
His first solo album, A World With No Skies, was released August 16, 2011, by Suburban Noize Records (the "2.0" edition, after an earlier version leaked online) — it reached #33 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and #22 on Top Rap Albums. That same year he won "Hip Hop Artist Of The Year" at the Boston Music Awards.
The King of Everything Else (2014, Billboard 200 #189) followed, along with the collaborative EP Slaine Is Dead with The Arcitype (2016), the collaborative album Anti-Hero with Termanology under the name "Slaine vs. Termanology" (2017), One Day (2019), and The Things We Can't Forgive (2021).
2013
V. The Boston Project
In 2013 he released The Boston Project, an album where every song features a guest from the Boston scene — including Esoteric, Ed O.G., Millyz, Phinelia, Twice Thou, Lou Armstrong, and Ea$y Money, each on a different track. On the project, Slaine said: "I wanted to create a record that highlights what this city has to offer musically and show how diverse the talent is [...] This record embodies something much larger than just a Slaine record." It reached #40 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and #10 on Top Heatseekers.

VI. Current Era
In 2025 he released A New State Of Grace alongside Statik Selektah (Brick Records) — a direct continuation of the State of Grace mixtape Statik Selektah released in 2011. The album features Ill Bill, Paul Wall, Millyz, O.C., Masta Ace, Termanology, KXNG Crooked, Rasheed Chappell, OT The Real, and Haile Supreme as guests.
In 2022 he opened Charles River Recovery, a detox and residential treatment center in the Boston area — he found sobriety in March 2014 after a long struggle with alcoholism and addiction. His current Instagram account describes him as "Co-founder, Recovery Advocate."

BEYOND THE MUSIC
Acting Career
Beyond his music career, Slaine has a substantial career as an actor. Ben Affleck cast him in Gone Baby Gone (2007) — his first role — as the character Bubba Rogowski, after reading about his music in a Boston Herald article. Affleck brought him back for The Town (2010); alongside the rest of the cast, they won Best Cast at the National Board of Review and at the 2010 Washington DC Area Film Critics Association Awards.
He continued acting in Killing Them Softly (2012), By the Gun (2014), Girl House (2014, as the antagonist "Loverboy"), Central Intelligence (2016), Let Me Make You a Martyr (2016), Dead Draw (2016), Wheelman (2017, Netflix), Run with the Hunted (2019), Ida Red (2021), It Snows All the Time (2022), Little Dixie (2023), and One Day as a Lion (2023).
His most recent activity includes Rule of Thirds (2024), King Ivory (2024), Long Gone Heroes (2024), and two large-scale productions: Joker: Folie à Deux (2024) and The Running Man (2025).
