DUO · BRECHTIAN PUNK CABARET

THE DRESDEN DOLLS

Boston duo formed in 2000 by Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione, self-described as “Brechtian punk cabaret.” After Yes, Virginia... (2006), long pauses and returns, they came back in 2026 with a re-recording of that album and a 20th-anniversary tour.

BIOGRAPHY

2000

I. A Halloween Party

The Dresden Dolls formed in Boston in 2000, a week after drummer Brian Viglione saw Amanda Palmer perform solo at a Halloween party. They were first called Out of Arms. Palmer sings, plays piano and writes the songs; Viglione plays drums, sings backing vocals and, on some songs, plays guitar or bass.

To describe their sound, Palmer coined her own label, “Brechtian punk cabaret,” because she was afraid the press would come up with a name that involved the word “gothic.”

2001–2003

II. The Boston Scene

After a self-released demo in 2001, the duo put out A Is for Accident in May 2003, a collection of early recordings, most of them live. That same year they won the WBCN Rock & Roll Rumble, Boston's long-running battle of the bands.

Their debut album, The Dresden Dolls, came out on September 26, 2003, on their own label, 8 ft. Records. Roadrunner Records, which signed them through David Bason, later reissued it.

2004–2006

III. Coin-Operated Boy and Yes, Virginia...

“Coin-Operated Boy” and “Girl Anachronism” became their signature songs: in 2004 both made Australian radio station Triple J's Hottest 100, at No. 12 and No. 30. In March 2005 the duo supported Nine Inch Nails on tour, and that year WFNX and The Boston Phoenix named them Best Local Act and Best Local Album.

Yes, Virginia..., their second studio album, came out on April 18, 2006, on Roadrunner and reached No. 42 on the Billboard 200. From December 2006 into January 2007, their music carried The Onion Cellar, an original production co-written by Palmer at the American Repertory Theater's Zero Arrow Theatre in Cambridge.

2007–2009

IV. The Pause

On January 14, 2007, the duo announced a temporary hiatus. Their November 2006 shows at London's Roundhouse came out in the U.S. as the DVD Live at the Roundhouse on July 10, 2007. Meanwhile, Viglione toured with H.U.M.A.N.W.I.N.E. and other acts from the Boston scene.

May 2008 brought No, Virginia..., a collection of B-sides and rarities from the Yes, Virginia... era. That year Viglione confirmed the band was still on hiatus, stressing that he and Palmer remained on good terms.

V. The Returns

The pause was never an ending. In 2010 the duo returned for a U.S. tour that opened in New York on Halloween night and closed in San Francisco on New Year's Eve. A show in Mexico City followed on December 9, 2011, then a tour of New Zealand and Australia in January 2012.

In 2015 they played New York for Record Store Day; in October 2018 they gave three concerts in London. Plans for a new album in 2020 were shelved by the pandemic, but in late 2022 the duo was back on stage in Woodstock, New York, and in 2023 a U.S. tour took them to Riot Fest in Chicago.

In late 2025, at Mad Oak Studios in Boston, the duo re-recorded Yes, Virginia... from start to finish, mostly live, with engineer Benny Grotto; Paul Kolderie mixed it. The title, Tailor's Version, nods to Taylor Swift's re-recordings. Jinkx Monsoon and Veronica Swift appear as guest vocalists.

The album came out on August 7, 2026, preceded by new versions of “Backstabber,” “My Alcoholic Friends” and “Modern Moonlight.” With it, The Dresden Dolls set out on a 20th-anniversary tour for the record: it opened in Europe in September 2026 and has two nights scheduled at Boston's Colonial Theatre, December 4 and 5.
