BIOGRAPHY

1978

I. Roxbury, Boston

New Edition formed in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts, in 1978, when Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Bobby Brown and Ralph Tresvant began singing together as kids. Producer Maurice Starr discovered them at a talent night at the Strand Theatre — reliable sources disagree on the exact year of that night (1981 or 1982) and on the year Ronnie DeVoe joined after winning it (1980 or 1982), so both are documented here as a sequence of events rather than fixed dates.

1983–1985

II. Candy Girl And The Early Years

With Starr producing, the group signed to the Streetwise label and released Candy Girl (1983); the title track hit number one on the R&B chart. New Edition (1984) followed, with the singles “Cool It Now” and “Mr. Telephone Man” (also an R&B number one), then All for Love (1985), alongside a Coca-Cola endorsement deal.

Bobby Brown left the group to start his solo career — reliable sources disagree on whether that was late 1985 or 1986, so this too is documented as a sequence rather than a fixed date.

1987–1990

III. Johnny Gill And Bell Biv DeVoe

In 1987, Bell, Bivins and DeVoe voted to bring in Johnny Gill as a fifth member. With him, they recorded Heart Break (1988), produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, which included the R&B number-one single “Can You Stand the Rain.”

In 1990, Bell, Bivins and DeVoe also formed the trio Bell Biv DeVoe at Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis's own suggestion; their debut album, Poison, went quadruple platinum. Bivins also helped launch Boyz II Men's career. Gill and Tresvant pursued solo careers in parallel.

1996–2004

IV. Reunions

Home Again (1996) is the only studio album to feature all six members together — the original five plus Johnny Gill — including Bobby Brown's participation in the reunion; it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Starting in 2002, the group returned to touring as a five-piece without Brown, playing clubs, casinos and small arenas. One Love (2004), released on Bad Boy Records, was also recorded without Brown.

2012–2025

V. Recognition And Boston

The group received the Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award (2012), a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (January 23, 2017), and the BET Lifetime Achievement Award (2017), plus induction into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame (September 24, 2023). On August 30, 2025, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu declared New Edition Day and renamed Dearborn Street New Edition Way, a group honor tied to the act's 42nd anniversary.

2026

VI. The New Edition Way Tour And The Rock Hall

The 30-city New Edition Way Tour — with Boyz II Men and Toni Braxton, named for the Boston street honor — ran from January to April 2026 and closed out April 4 at Houston's Toyota Center.

The group received its first-ever Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nomination for the Class of 2026 (announced February 25, 2026) and won the fan vote outright, with 1,022,683 votes — about 120,000 more than runner-up Phil Collins. It was not, however, selected for the actual induction class, announced April 14, 2026; Rock Hall president Greg Harris stated publicly that the fan vote “is not automatic entry” and counts as only one ballot among many. New Edition remains eligible for future consideration. The group has confirmed California dates for January 15–16, 2027.
